ABOMASAL VOLVULUS IN TWO CALVES

ABSTRACT
Abomasal displacement is the abomasal disturbance most frequently diagnosed and represents the most usual reason for abdominal surgery in high production dairy cows but may also occur in calves, bulls and heifers. The present paper reports the occurrence of abomasal volvulus in two calves of Gir and Simental breeds and describes the necropsy findings. Both animals showed superacute clinical evolution. Main clinical signs reported were dyspnea, severe tympany and dry feces with mucus. Necropsy findings consists of peritoneal fluid with bloody aspect, severe abomasal dilatation and clockwise torsion in the pylorus varying from 180 to 270º with edematous wall and hemorrhagic necrosis in the serous; liver and kidney congestion, besides of an interstitial pulmonary emphysema. The current findings were due to the severe circulatory alterations in the abomasum and systemic disturbances.
