OCORRÊNCIAS GRAVES: INJÚRIAS CATASTRÓFICAS E NÃO-CATASTRÓFICAS NAS CORRIDAS NO HIPÓDROMO DE CIDADE JARDIM DO JOCKEY CLUB DE SÃO PAULO NO PERÍODO DE 1996 A 2006

Resumo

Este estudo epidemiológico sobre injúrias catastróficas ocorridas em cavalos Puro Sangue Inglês, durante as corridas do Hipódromo de Cidade Jardim do Jockey Club de São Paulo, entre os anos de 1996 e 2006, revelou uma incidência de 2,68 injúrias graves por mil cavalos largadores, das quais 67,1% foram não-fatais (1,8/1000 largadores) e 32,9% foram fatais (0,88/1000 largadores). Durante os 11 anos do estudo, foi observada uma diminuição progressiva, estatisticamente significativa, no número dos dias de corridas, corridas, largadas por cavalo e cavalos por páreo. Concomitantemente, observou-se um aumento das ocorrências catastróficas, fatais e não-fatais. A incidência, localização , tipo das injúrias,  causas de morte, sexo e a idade da população estudada foram compatíveis com aquelas publicadas na literatura. O número reduzido de corridas por cavalo por ano é uma situação grave provavelmente relacionada às características das pistas e aos métodos de treinamento. Estes e outros fatores responsáveis pela alta incidência de injúrias musculoesqueléticas que acarretam em altas perdas econômicas e aceleram o fim de campanha dos cavalos de corrida têm sido pouco estudados no Brasil. Estudos sobre os fatores responsáveis pelas injúrias graves se fazem extremamente necessários.
