HEMIPENICECTOMIA EM JARARACA-ILHOA (Bothrops insularis) - RELATO DE CASO
Keywords:
Bothrops insularis, hemipenis, surgery, snakesAbstract
Copulatory organ prolapses are more common in chelonians, although they can also occur in
snakes and lizards. They may be associated with different causes, such as trauma involving
the retractor muscle of hemipenes or cloacal sphincter, infections, forced separation during
copulation and secondary inflammation resulting from the use of probes for sexing. This
paper describes the surgical treatment performed on a male golden-lancehead (Bothrops
insularis) of Vivarium Conservation of Laboratório de Ecologia e Evolução do Instituto
Butantan, São Paulo, Brazil, which showed a prolapse in the right hemipenes. In this case,
hemipenicectomy was considered successful.
