Abstract

This paper reports the amitraz treatment accompaniment by hematological and biochemical results from a six months old dog with demodicosis. The day before the start of the treatment the blood count showed a slight normocytic normocromic anemia, mild leukocytosis with  neutrophilia with degenerative deviation to the left and monocytosis. The bone marrow showed high cellularity, high myeloid:erythroid ratio and distribution of myeloid cells in higher concentration in the proliferation and maturation pools and in lower concentration in the reserve pool. In the protein profile were observed hyperproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia and hyperglobulinemia. During the three initial weeks of treatment there were decreases in the white blood cell, red blood cells and platelets counts, resulting in pancytopenia, accompanied by the worsening in proteins changes, but normalization of bone marrow and physical improvement of the skin. After the fourth week the CBC showed a gradual return of variables to the baseline level, resulting in the restoration of normocythaemia and normoalbuminemia at the sixth week of treatment.
