Abstract

This study evaluated the method of molecular analysis to the identification of the sex of  birds using three different techniques of DNA extraction, from feathers and blood. A pair of allele-specific pair of primers, P2/P8, for gene CHD, located on the sexual chromosomes (Z and W) of birds was used, for polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The three DNA extraction techniques were efficient to all the 16 species analyzed. No difference in the amplification of the alleles when compared to gel was found. However, the DNA extraction by PEF showed a longer time of conservation of DNA in relation to the other techniques, having the better cost- benefit-ratio.
