In veterinary medicine, antibiotics are widely used in both companion and production animals for therapeutic, metaphylactic, or prophylactic treatment of bacterial infections, and have also been used as growth promoters in the past. The routine and irrational use of these antimicrobials has caused the selection of multidrug-resistant bacteria, reducing the number of effective antimicrobials. In addition, frequent contact between animals and humans increases the risk of infection and cross-transmission of these bacteria. The present study aims to address the topic of bacterial resistance in veterinary medicine and its relationship with public health.
