Abstract

The use of gabapentinoids, especially gabapentin, is increasingly presente in the veterinary clinical routine. Initially its use was approved as na anticonvulsant and it the treatment of chronic neuropathic pain. In addition, it can be used for acute pain, starting its administration before the painful event and maintaining it in the post-event, fortunately with the multimodal analgesia and the reduction of stress in transport and handling of more irascible cats. To start your treatment in the case of pain, an adequate assessment is necessary to quantify from mild, moderate or intense pain in dogs and cats and, for that, must be used validated scales in both species that can be visual estimates, according to felt expressions or physical estimates, folllowing the example of a palpation in the affected region. This is the only way we can adjust doses, frequencies and effectiveness of administration, achieving the main objective of pain control.
