Abstract

Glossectomy is a surgical procedure for amputating the tongue, mainly in cases of neoplasia or necrosis and with a risk of infection, which improves the animal's quality of life, and combined with esophagostomy, facilitates feeding and reduces suture dehiscence. There are few reports of glossectomy due to necrosis. To this end, the present report aims to describe an occurrence, at the University Veterinary Hospital "Médico Veterinário Jeremias Pereira da Silva", of the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI), Teresina-Piauí, of a strangulating foreign body at the base of the tongue and necrosis in sublingual region in a 5-month-old dog, the optimization of a multimodal anesthetic protocol and encouragement of new reports of glossectomy due to trauma/necrosis.
