Abstract

Syndactyly is an anatomical alteration that consists of congenital malformations characterized by the fusion of the phalanges. The objective of this study was to report a case of a canine with a malformation in the left thoracic limb. The animal was a female, fertile, seven months old, and weighed 12.3 kg. The owner reported that since birth the patient had frequent injuries on the left thoracic limb. During the physical examination, changes in the locomotor system were observed, indicating a malformation. The radiographic evaluation revealed fusion of the first and second carpal bones, which were articulated with the first, second, and third metacarpal bones. Fusion of the middle phalanges of the second and third digits was also observed, as well as incongruity in the metacarpophalangeal joint of the third digit, leading to the diagnosis of syndactyly. Due to the fusion of the middle phalanges of the 2nd and 3rd digits, during the surgical procedure, it was decided to resect both. Fourteen days after surgery, the patient presented adequate tissue healing without pain or discomfort in the paw.
