Abstract

The objectives of this study were to determine seroprevalence of cysticercosis of swine
“raised in the backyard” in the Registro microregion, São Paulo state, and to investigate the
epidemiological aspects related to this disease. Five hundred fifty-one serum samples were
analyzed by indirect ELISA and epidemiological questionnaires were applied to the animals’
owners. The results showed a seroprevalence of 20,5%, which identified this region as an
endemic area to swine cysticercosis. Analysis of data from the epidemiological questionnaires
showed an association between swine cysticercosis, animals’ age bracket, history of
vermifuge drug use in humans, type of swine breeding, and disposal of human feces. The
longer exposure to the causative agent probably led swine over one year old to show higher
infection rates than younger animals. The human treatment with antihelminthic drugs seemed
efficient measure in controlling swine cysticercosis. Breeding of non-confined swine and
inappropriate disposal of human feces were important risk factors for swine cysticercosis.
The preventive actions such as sanitary education, adequacy of the rural basic sanitation,
necessity of the breeding of confined swine, examination of feces of the involved population
and respective treatment of the porter of teniasis are feasible measures, considered important.
The assemblage of all factors supported by health official organs will serve as tool to be
applied in the control of the teniasis for Taenia solium and of the swine cysticercosis in
endemic rural areas, such as Registro’s microregion - SP.
