The aspects related to the actions of sanitary and epidemiological surveillance are presented, with emphasis on the role of veterinarian in the public health context. His inclusion in health and agricultural science areas as become him a professional able to integrate the actions of control the human disease with other professionals of health area. The philosophical and historical aspects of sanitary and epidemiological surveillance are described, and the link with the health unified system, focusing on the important role of veterinarian in this context.
