Abstract

The beekeeping activity in Brazil, especially in the Northeast region, is marked by the constant loss of colonies, and beekeepers seek to replenish these losses by capturing migratory swarms. Beekeepers with more knowledge attempt to multiply their colonies using various methods of swarm division and multiplication. However, most of the time, it is not evaluated which of these methods are more suitable for this process, considering the time required for the colonies to develop. The objective of this study was to evaluate three methods commonly used by beekeepers regarding the number of days the colonies take to develop. For this purpose, 12 colonies of Africanized bees were grouped into 3 treatments: Traditional Method, Method X, and Method Tower, each with 4 replications. The variables were subjected to analysis of variance and Tukey-Kramer test. There was a significant difference between the multiplication methods tested in the daughter colonies (F = 7.16; df = 2, 9; P = 0.014) and in the mother colonies (F = 30.4; df = 2, 9; P < 0.01). The Tower and X methods showed faster development compared to the traditional method (P < 0.05). Comparatively analyzing the development period of the daughter colonies with the recovery period of the mother colonies, it was observed that there was no statistical difference between them (P>0.05). In conclusion, the Tower and X methods can be applied in the swarm multiplication process, ensuring a shorter time interval for the development of the daughter colony and recovery of the donor colony.
