Abstract

Fasciola hepatica (F. hepatica) is a helminth that parasitizes the liver and bile ducts of its hosts, which consequently damages these tissues. They are predominant in cattle and sheep, but can accidentally parasitize humans. The number of cases of fasciolosis is increasing widely in several countries, compromising the economy and the unique health of the places where it occurs. Despite the increase in the number of cases, data collection and understanding of the disease remain neglected, both in animals, because most cases are subclinical, and in humans, due to their low incidence. This situation contributes to a reduction in the number of diagnoses performed and increases inaccurate results. The safest technique is gene-based molecular identification, such as PCR and qPCR, and the most recurrent treatment is the administration of triclabendazole, in animals and humans. The life cycle of the trematode depends directly on the presence of water, which leads to the occurrence of zoonosis on a larger scale in places with this characteristic. Therefore, control of spread and prophylaxis include pasture rotation, drainage or isolation of flooded areas, and reduction of the population of intermediate hosts.
