Abstract

The total hip replacement (THR) has been performed with success for more than 30 years.
The canine hip dysplasia is the main cause of degenerative orthopedic disease in dogs, and
therefore, represents the most common reason for prosthetic replacement. The THR is a
procedure that preserves the normal function of the hind limb and also reestablishes the
regular movements without pain. The material consists of a high density polyethylene
acetabular cup implant attached to a metal femur component containing the head and the
stem. The total recovery of the animal occurs at around 8 weeks after surgery and it is
observed in more than 90% of the cases. The rate of complications related to the procedure is
relatively low and it is mainly caused by a non-septic luxation and looseness of the THR
components. The THR usually maintain a satisfactory function throughout the whole life of
the animal and has been commonly used as a reliable technique for the treatment of a variety
of abnormal conditions of the canine hip. In view of the relevance of the subject and growing
number of study in dogs with job of different kinds of prosthesis, tried a revision brought up
to date be carried out of the even.
