Resumen

La prótesis total de la articulación coxofemoral (PTC) ha sido realizada con éxito en perros
hace más de 30 años. La displasia coxofemoral es la principal afección causante de la
enfermedad articular degenerativa en perros y, por eso, representa la indicación más común
del procedimiento protético articular. La PTC es un procedimiento que no solamente preserva
la función del miembro como restablece mecanismos articulares sin dolor, y consiste en el
implante de una cúpula acetabular de polietileno de alta densidad y un componente femoral
compuesto de cabeza y asta femoral metálicas. La función total del miembro operado regresa
alrededor de ocho semanas tras el pos-operatorio, y es observada en más de un 90% de los
animales sometidos al procedimiento protético. El índice de complicaciones de la PTC es
relativamente bajo, y es representado principalmente por la luxación y aflojamiento aséptico
de sus componentes. La PTC usualmente presenta función satisfactoria a lo largo de la vida
del animal y ha sido establecido como procedimiento clínico seguro para el tratamiento de
una variedad de condiciones animales anormales de la articulación coxofemoral canina.
