Abstract

Most producers of dairy herd seek increasingly cut output to the problems related to animal productivity. One such problem is the choice of forage plant, once that farmers insist on the idea of the existence of "miracle plant", which would have the best productive and nutritious features. In this review it was discussed the main agronomic and nutritional characteristics of elephant grass connecting the same to the management of the plant during its cultivation (season-cut, stubble height, rest period, fertilization, among others). The results showed that the plants vary in their characteristics according to the site, management adopted and time of cultivation. Therefore, it should be given special attention to the physiology of the plant with the environment of cultivation.
