COMPARISON OF THE PREPUCIAL CYTOLOGY OF DOGS WITH NORMAL ABDOMINAL TESTES

The aim of the present study was to characterize the cellular pattern of the prepucial epithelium in normally descended testes and in dogs with testes in the abdomen. The identification and classification of the cells was based on the vaginal cytology of the bitch. Prepucial smears were collected from 101 dogs, 89 (G1) dogs with both normal descended testicles and 12 criptorchid dogs (G2) and stained by the diff-quick procedure. The cells were counted in 10 fields. There was no statistical difference between the percentages of epithelial cells considering both groups. The predominant cellular type had been the intermediate cell. Few parabasal cells were present. In the criptorchid dogs, the young adults had distinguished themselves, not yet presenting clinical signs of testicular pathology with consequent estrogen production acting on the prepucial mucousa.
