Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the antibodies prevalence of Bovine viral diarrhea virus, Bovine herpesvirus 1 and Bovine leukemia virus in a herd of river buffaloes from the Marajó Island. The serum neutralization technique was used for the detection of Bovine viral diarrhea virus and Bovine herpesvirus 1 antibodies. The agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) was used for the detection of Bovine leukemia virus antibodies. The prevalence of antibody to the Bovine herpesvirus 1 in buffaloes is very similar to the observed in cattle. The  Bovine viral diarrhea virus showed a below average prevalence whether compared to the antibodies prevalence in cattle and buffaloes created in other parts of Brazil. The Bovine leukemia virus showed a very low prevalence of antibodies, however, these parameters were similar to others

observed in buffaloes in Brazil and worldwide. These parameters differ from the prevalence observed in cattle, which probably suggests a natural resistance from this specie to the virus. This fact, however, needs to be further elucidated.
