RESEARCH OF Salmonella spp. IN DRAG SWABS ORIGINATING FROM POULTRY HOUSES
Keywords:
Salmonella, drag swab, broiler chicken, poultryAbstract
Salmonellosis are diseases provoked by bacteria of the genus Salmonella that cause large economic losses to industrial poultry. All transmission sources are potentially important for Salmonella, necessitating their characterization under the different aspects of management and environment inherent to each type of commercial raising. The present work aimed to verify the occurrence of Salmonella in poultry houses by means of drag swabs. In the period from November of 2005 to November of 2007, 806 samples were analyzed from broiler chicken poultry houses located in the State of Sao Paulo. In the poultry houses, the swabs were dragged across the poultry litter and then transferred to plastic sacks containing buffered peptonated water After arrival at the laboratory, the samples were processed with the aim of isolating and identifying Salmonella. Of the 806 total drag swab samples analyzed, 22 were positive for Salmonella. Among the serotypes isolated, 11 were identified as Give, 4 Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica – rough strain, 2 Enteritidis, 2 Infantins, 1 Kentucky, 1 Rissen and 1 Senftenberg.
