Abstract

The treatment of the osteoarthritis requests several therapy modalities, including weight reduction, nutritional support, physical therapy, surgical procedures and pharmacological management. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) drugs are the ones frequently used to relieve pain in short and long time periods, however it is necessary to take special care while using them. Current concept is that the use of NSAIDs that are selective inhibitors of COX-2 without affecting COX-1 induces analgesia without the adverse effects attributed to COX-1 inhibition, especially gastrointestinal and renal toxicities and thrombocyte function inhibition. Among the selective inhibitors of COX-2, the firocoxib - specially developed for veterinary medicine and approved for dog use - presents oral administration and high palatability advantages.
