Swine erysipela (SE) is an hemorragic disease with cutaneous, articular, cardiac or septicemic lesions in swine and that is caused by the bacteria Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. Animals between two and twelve months and pregnant sows are the most susceptible categories, and this last one may present abortion and sudden death. The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae biotherapic and homeopathic medicine mixed in the reproductive animals’ food in a continuous way to prevent SE in comparison to the use of oxitetracyclin antibiotics mixed to the food and the vaccination with bacterin in a commercial swine herd. Evaluation period was from January 2002 to December 2007, and it was divided in two equal phases of three years each. In the first moment it was used only the allopathic medicine and immunoprofilaxy to SE with a commercial bacterin. In the second moment, the use of antibiotics and bacterin was eliminated and it was adopted the prophylaxis of SE with the exclusive use of homeopathic medicine. In the first phase of the study, 45 sows died; in the second phase, 19 deaths occurred, showing a significative reduction of 57.7% (p=0.04). Also, using the homeopathic medicine plus the biotherapic there was significative reduction (p=0.01) of stillbirth and the number of abortions in sows when compared to the conventional allopathic prevention. It can be concluded that the use of homeopathic medicine together with the biotherapic for the prevention of SE is a possible alternative in commercial herd.
