Canine abortion caused by Brucella canis

This paper describes the occurrence of abortion in a bitch caused by Brucella canis and the isolation of B. canis from the aborted canine fetus. Positive bacteriological cultures were obtained from fetal liver, spleen and lungs. Vaginal swabs and blood from animal were negative by the bacteriological cultures. The presence of Brucella spp DNA was evidenced in vaginal swab samples by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The seroagglutination and agar gel immunediffusion tests had resulted positive.
