Abstract

Toxoplasmosis is a worldwide distributed zoonosis caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. It has great importance for public health, as affect humans and homeothermic animals. Toxoplasmosis can be asymptomatic or present systemic conditions, with severe cases in pregnant women and immunosupressed individuals, as well as causing sanitary and economic problems in the countries where it is found. Therefore, the objective of this review was to approach toxoplasmosis as a public health problem. It is very important to know the disease, forms of infection, as it occurs in each species, diagnosis and prevention. The treatment is effective, but it is recommended that prevention be related to eating habits, such as avoiding the consumption of raw or undercooked meat, badly washed vegetables and fruits, contaminated water, as well as regular prenatal exams to assess progress infection, considering the transplacental transmission in pregnant women.
